Margazhi month, known as the Twilight in Heaven time, is the most suitable occasion to take a cue from the Sun while it is in Sagittarius, the period known as the time the Gods rest and rejuvenate.
During this auspicious time, Lord Shiva’s birthday comes, which is celebrated on the Arudra star day and is known as Arudra Darshan. It is believed to be the day when Lord Shiva’s energy is very close to the earth; hence it has been given the importance of being His birthday.
Lord Shiva is worshiped in the cosmic dance form, making His power and heightened consciousness accessible to those who seek it. It is considered that Arudra Darshan, Lord Nataraja’s day, is the longest night of the year. After this, the days get longer and the nights get shorter.
He Who Dances A Still Dance
The divine dance of Lord Shiva in Tillai, the traditional name for Chidambaram, forms the motif for all the depictions of Lord Shiva as “Nataraja”, the King of Cosmic Dance. He is also known as “Sabesan” which means “the Lord who dances on the dais”. In this dancing form, Lord Shiva lifts His left leg and has His right foot stepping on the demon of ego, famously known as “the God who dances a still dance”. Chidambaram is a temple in South India that holds the power of the dancing Shiva (Shiva in this form is called Lord Nataraja). The bronze sculpture of Lord Nataraja is considered to be the symbol of Indian Culture.

Arudra Darshan – The Festival
This is a striking festival where meticulously performed Vedic rituals are offered to Lord Nataraja. These rituals are held in the pre-dawn hours, when the moon is still shining brightly. Various ceremonies are held amidst the holy chants in Sanskrit and Tamil.
Chidambaram Temple
The Chidambaram Nataraj temple is a specimen of the assimilation of several architectural styles. This temple vortex is of great religious, historic and cultural significance. The temple was designed by “Manikkavachakar” with full praise of Shiva and is over two millennium old.
